A postgraduate medical student was found dead under suspicious circumstances inside a car in Dehradun late at night, triggering a police investigation. The student, Tanvi, was pursuing MS in Ophthalmology at Shri Guru Ram Rai Institute of Medical and Health Sciences.
According to family members, she was discovered unconscious in her locked car parked along a roadside. Relatives broke the window to pull her out and rushed her to Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital, where doctors declared her dead. She was originally from Ambala City in Haryana and was living in Dehradun with her mother.
The case has taken a serious turn after the student’s father, Lalit Mohan, alleged mental, academic, and financial harassment by Head of Department Dr Priyanka Gupta. He claimed that his daughter had been under severe stress for the past four months and had repeatedly shared concerns about departmental pressure.
In his complaint at Patel Nagar Police Station, he stated that Tanvi had been enrolled in the MS programme since September 2023. He alleged that after a change in departmental leadership in December 2025, when Dr. Priyanka Gupta took over, the academic environment became increasingly stressful. The family claimed that despite earlier good academic records, she was later threatened with failing marks.
On the night of the incident, Tanvi reportedly spoke to her father for nearly an hour, describing her distress. She sent a message around 11:15 pm stating she would reach home by 12:30 am, but contact was lost afterwards. Her family, who travelled from Ambala, later traced her car near a hospital road, where she was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat. A cannula was attached to her hand, and medical items, including injections, were found inside the vehicle.
Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Dobhal said that the investigation is underway, with focus on the postmortem report, mobile call records, and institutional inputs. Police have initiated proceedings based on the complaint, and further action will depend on forensic findings.

While the allegations raise serious concerns about academic pressure and institutional accountability, officials have stated that conclusions will only be drawn after a detailed investigation.
