In a major verdict in the sensational suitcase murder case reported nearly four years ago in the Sidcul area, a local court has sentenced the main accused to life imprisonment. The incident had taken place in Shivnagar Colony and had triggered widespread shock at the time.
The court of the Third Additional Sessions Judge found Rohit guilty of murdering his live-in partner and awarded him rigorous life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 30,000. The co-accused, Manju, was convicted for destroying evidence and assisting the accused. She has been sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 5,000.
The crime dates back to May 2020, when the country was under Covid restrictions. Rohit, who worked at a factory in the Sidcul industrial area, was living with his live-in partner Sonam alias Varsha in Shivnagar Colony. Another woman, Manju, was also staying in the same house as a tenant. During investigation, it emerged that Rohit was in a relationship with both women, leading to frequent disputes and tension in the house.
On the night of May 24, 2020, Rohit, along with Manju, allegedly murdered Sonam following prolonged conflict. After committing the crime, they concealed the body inside a suitcase and hid it in the bathroom. The suitcase was later recovered by police following a tip-off.
Police officials stated that solving the case was challenging due to the prevailing pandemic conditions. Separate teams were formed to trace the accused. Based on technical evidence, Rohit was arrested from Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh, while Manju was apprehended earlier near Denso Chowk.
