Roorkee – A shocking case of betrayal and murder has come to light from Kankarkhata village in Uttarakhand, where a young man killed his close friend after a minor argument under the influence of alcohol. The accused, Rohit alias Balu, strangled his friend Sunny, the very person who had helped him financially and provided his identity documents to purchase a mobile phone on instalments.
According to police, the incident occurred on January 27 when Rohit, Sunny and another youth travelled to Sultanpur, where Rohit purchased a mobile phone with Sunny’s assistance. Sunny not only allowed the phone to be bought in his name but also helped with the down payment. Later, the group consumed alcohol together. After some time, Rohit and Sunny went to a liquor shop in Kunhari to buy more alcohol, where an argument broke out over the mobile phone issue.
In an intoxicated state, the dispute escalated, and Rohit strangled Sunny to death. After committing the murder, the accused hid the body in a sugarcane field near Kunhari village and fled the scene. Despite committing the crime, Rohit continued to stay with Sunny’s family and villagers, pretending to help search for the missing man and misleading them for several days.
As suspicion grew, police questioned Sunny’s close associates. During interrogation, Rohit alias Balu, a resident of Kankarkhata, confessed to the murder. On his identification, police recovered Sunny’s body from the sugarcane field. Inspector Rajeev Rauthan confirmed that the missing person case was converted into murder charges, and the accused was arrested and sent to jail after being produced before the court.
Police stated that Sunny and Rohit were of the same age and shared a deep friendship. They worked together as labourers and often spent time with mutual friends, including drinking alcohol. Sunny had no idea that helping his friend buy a mobile phone would ultimately lead to his own death.
