Dehradun, 3 Nov: The atmosphere in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly today was filled with jubilation and pride as the special session, graced by the presence of President Droupadi Murmu, witnessed a rare blend of emotions. The occasion was the Silver Jubilee of Uttarakhand’s formation, a moment of immense significance for the hill state. However, the recent victory of India’s daughters in the Women’s Cricket World Cup, added to the joy in the House and this infused the proceedings with an air of national celebration. When President Murmu commended Uttarakhand’s efforts towards women’s empowerment, the mood in the House grew even more spirited.
The most stirring moment came when Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami extended heartfelt congratulations to the Indian women’s cricket team for their historic World Cup win. As his words echoed through the Assembly, President Murmu, seated in the House, joined in the applause with visible enthusiasm, leading the entire Assembly in a standing ovation that reflected the collective pride of the nation.
When the Leader of the House and Chief Minister Dhami began his speech, he first lauded the Indian women’s team, saying that through this august House, he wishes to congratulate the daughters of Mother India who have won the Women’s Cricket World Cup for the first time. This World Champion team has given new inspiration to crores of women and girls across the country.
The CM’s words were greeted with loud desk-thumping by the members, but the highlight of the session was undoubtedly the moment when President Murmu joined the applause with infectious enthusiasm. Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) and Speaker Ritu Khanduri Bhushan also joined in, and the entire House reverberated with claps and cheers, marking a moment of unity and celebration.
Later in her address, the President also congratulated the women’s cricket team in her own words, acknowledging their outstanding achievement and describing their victory as a beacon of inspiration for women across India. Her words were met with appreciation by all members present in the House, further heightening the celebratory mood of the session.
Very interestingly, the visuals from the Assembly on this occasion were remarkable and imbued with cultural pride. Speaker Ritu Khanduri, along with several leaders and MLAs, appeared in traditional Uttarakhandi attire, giving the session a distinctive regional charm. The Pahari topi (hill cap), the Pichhaura (traditional garment of Kumaoni women), and the ornate Nath (nose ring) lent a festive traditional touch to the proceedings. The President was presented with a special souvenir based on the Ramman art form, symbolising the state’s rich cultural heritage.
CM Dhami, along with all BJP leaders and MLAs, donned the traditional topi, while Speaker Ritu Khanduri’s ensemble of Pichhaura and Pahari topi made her appearance particularly striking. The entire atmosphere of the Assembly was steeped in traditional colour and enthusiasm, reflecting both the pride of Uttarakhand’s 25-year journey and the joy of India’s recent sporting triumph.
