Dehradun, December 11, 2024: To combat the shortage of specialist doctors in Uttarakhand, the state government has formulated a strategy to increase postgraduate (PG) seats in government medical colleges. This year, 11 PG seats have already been added in Dehradun and Srinagar medical colleges.
Current Scenario:
- Approved Specialist Doctor Posts: 1,200
- Vacant Posts: Over 500
Due to the significant number of vacant specialist positions, many patients are referred to larger hospitals. To address this issue, the government aims to expand the number of PG seats in each medical college to 100.
Current PG Seat Distribution:
- Dehradun, Srinagar, and Haldwani Medical Colleges: 181 seats combined
Health Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat stated that while the state has a sufficient number of MBBS doctors, there is a pressing need for specialists in nearby health centers. Increasing PG seats in MS and MD courses will help alleviate this shortage by 2028.
