The grand finale of the “Uttarakhand Health Premier League” cricket tournament, aimed at promoting health awareness across the state, concluded with a spectacular celebration. This unique tournament was designed to encourage a healthier lifestyle while spreading awareness about various public health concerns.
In this inaugural edition, Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) emerged as the champions, playing under the theme “Less Oil, Sugar, and Salt”. They clinched the title by defeating CMO Kings 11, who were playing under the theme “Child Health – Use ORS Solution to Fight Diarrhea”, by a margin of 28 runs. UPCL won the toss and opted to bat first, putting up a score of 172 runs for 7 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. In reply, CMO Kings 11 could only score 144 runs, falling short of the target. Sanjay Joshi was the star of the match, taking 5 wickets, and was awarded the Man of the Match for his outstanding performance.
The tournament also saw some standout individual performances:
- Best Batsman: Shubham Bhandari, scoring 198 runs across the tournament.
- Best Bowler: Sanjay Joshi, with 10 wickets throughout the tournament.
- Fair Play Award: Team NHM for demonstrating exemplary sportsmanship during the competition.
Suresh Bhatt, Vice President of the National Rural Health and Monitoring Council, Uttarakhand, was the chief guest at the closing ceremony. While congratulating the winning teams, he said, “Adopting a healthy lifestyle is essential in today’s fast-paced world, and this tournament has provided a unique way to raise awareness about health issues. I hope this initiative reaches every section of society.”
The tournament also marked the beginning of a new “Tobacco-Free Campaign” across the state, initiated by Mr. Bhatt during the closing ceremony. He praised the efforts of all participating teams for playing with dedication and encouraged more such initiatives to promote health awareness.
A major attraction of the event was RJ Kavya, who brought his unique style to the commentary, energizing the crowd and further enhancing the message of health and fitness among the participants and audience.
The Uttarakhand Health Premier League highlighted important health themes during the tournament, including balanced diets, child health, mental health, and lifestyle disease prevention. The innovative use of cricket as a medium to spread public health messages received praise from participants and health experts alike.
The first edition of the league featured eight participating departments, each representing a critical health theme:
- National Health Mission (NHM) – Full Immunization
- SIDCUL – Tobacco Control
- Income Tax Department – Tuberculosis Eradication
- Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Department – Maternal Health
- UPCL – Non-Communicable Diseases
- Post Office – Waterborne Diseases
- PWD – Mental Health
- CMO, Dehradun – Child Health
