Dehradun, December 10, 2024: The path for local body elections in Uttarakhand has been cleared after the Governor approved the ordinance related to OBC reservation in municipal bodies. With this approval, OBC reservation will be implemented based on the report of a single-member dedicated commission. The official notification for the elections is likely to be issued by the end of this month.
The ordinance had earlier received clearance from the state’s Law Department, which sent its legal opinion to the Governor’s office. Following legal scrutiny, the Governor approved the proposed changes in the law, paving the way for implementing OBC reservations in local bodies.
The legal team at Raj Bhavan had initially withheld approval, seeking clarity on certain legal provisions. After reviewing the recommendations and legal opinions, the Law Department confirmed that the Governor has the authority to approve the ordinance, which has now been formally sanctioned.
With the ordinance approved, the process of enforcing OBC reservation in municipal bodies will proceed swiftly, clearing the final hurdle for holding local body elections in the state.
