Dehradun, February 2025 – Budget cuts have left 272 contract coaches, who played a key role in preparing athletes for the 38th National Games, in a state of uncertainty. While ₹11 crore was required for their salaries, the government has approved only ₹10 lakh, leaving them without any financial security as their contracts expire in February.
Budget Crisis Puts Coaches’ Future at Risk
The sports department is concerned as these coaches were supposed to have their contracts renewed based on the new budget after February 28. However, with insufficient funds, their future remains uncertain. The state currently has only 25-30 permanent coaches, and the efforts of 272 contract coaches contributed to Uttarakhand’s historic performance at the National Games. These coaches were eager to continue training athletes year-round, but now face career uncertainty.
Supplementary Budget Expected, But No Clarity for Coaches
Due to severe budget cuts, the sports department received only ₹250 crore instead of the proposed ₹850 crore, making it difficult to even reward medal winners. While an additional budget is anticipated, there is no assurance regarding the contract coaches’ salaries. These coaches play a crucial role across Uttarakhand’s districts, yet their financial stability remains in question.
