Rishikesh. A 30-year-old tourist from Madhya Pradesh went missing in the Ganga after jumping into the river to rescue a woman who was being swept away by the strong current near Phool Chatti Ghat in the Laxman Jhula area on Monday.
According to officials, the family was bathing at the confluence of the Heval River and the Ganga when the incident occurred.
SDRF Inspector Kavindra Sajwan said a woman identified as Renu Gurjar (33) was suddenly caught in the river’s strong current during the bath. In an attempt to save her, Shailendra Mahavi (30), a resident of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, immediately jumped into the river.
While the woman managed to reach the riverbank safely, Shailendra was swept away by the strong current and went missing.
Following the incident, teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched a search and rescue operation using specialised rescue equipment. Efforts to trace the missing tourist were continuing till the last reports.
