Dehradun – Heavy monsoon rainfall has exposed major infrastructure concerns in Dehradun after a newly constructed ₹16 crore bridge near Nanda Ki Chowki suffered significant damage during the season’s first spell of rain. A large portion of the bridge’s approach road caved in, creating a deep crater and forcing authorities to completely suspend vehicular movement on the route.
The bridge, which was completed recently, failed to withstand the initial monsoon showers, raising serious questions over the quality of construction. As a precautionary measure, the administration closed the bridge to traffic to prevent any untoward incidents.
Meanwhile, severe waterlogging near Rangers Ground disrupted traffic movement, causing inconvenience to commuters as several vehicles struggled to pass through the flooded stretch.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that the southwest monsoon has once again become active across Uttarakhand. The weather office has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in most districts, while issuing heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings for several parts of the state. District administrations have been directed to remain on high alert.
Orange Alert for Heavy Rainfall
According to the Meteorological Centre, an orange alert has been issued for parts of Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Udham Singh Nagar, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, and Nainital districts. These areas are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning. Other districts may also experience intense spells of rain at isolated places.
Weather experts have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions and stay away from rivers, streams, and other water bodies. People living in hilly regions have been urged to remain vigilant and regularly monitor official weather updates.
The IMD has indicated that the current weather pattern is expected to continue across Uttarakhand until August 2, with intermittent rainfall likely in most parts of the state.
