Prayagraj: Pilgrims at the Sangam during the upcoming Maha Kumbh Mela will have ample water for the holy dip, as the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) has begun releasing additional water into the Ganga at the request of Uttar Pradesh’s Irrigation Department.
According to THDC, sufficient water has been stored in the Tehri Dam reservoir to ensure that all Ganga ghats, from Devprayag to Prayagraj, remain submerged during the event. On Sunday, 34.01 cusecs of water were recorded in the Bhagirathi River, while the Bhilangana River saw 22.28 cusecs. Currently, 220 cumecs of water is being released, with the reservoir’s water level at 811.04 RL meters.
SS Panwar, CGM of THDC, assured that water release has been planned according to state demands, ensuring an uninterrupted water supply at the Sangam for pilgrims. The decision comes amid concerns of low winter rainfall and reduced Himalayan snowmelt potentially impacting river levels.
