Meta finds itself embroiled in controversy after a comment by CEO Mark Zuckerberg on India’s elections. Nishikant Dubey, BJP MP and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and IT, stated that Meta must apologize to the Indian Parliament and the public for spreading misinformation. The committee plans to summon Meta for clarification on the matter.
Zuckerberg’s Controversial Statement
Zuckerberg reportedly claimed in a podcast that most incumbent governments, including India’s, faced electoral defeats in 2024. This remark drew sharp criticism from Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who called it factually incorrect. Vaishnaw highlighted that over 640 million voters participated in the 2024 general elections, which led to a historic third-term victory for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA.
Minister Highlights India’s Governance Model
Vaishnaw underscored India’s achievements during the pandemic, including free food distribution to 800 million people, administration of 2.2 billion vaccines, and global assistance initiatives. He urged Meta and Zuckerberg to maintain their credibility by disseminating factual information.
