Following the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand, two couples in Dehradun have applied for live-in relationship registration through the UCC portal. Their applications are currently under police verification, and upon successful verification, they will receive legal recognition to live together.
UCC Portal Registrations So Far
Since UCC came into effect, 193 individuals have registered under various categories, including:
- Marriage registration
- Divorce
- Nullity of marriage
- Legal heir declaration
- Will registration
However, these are the first live-in relationship applications under the new law, undergoing verification at the registrar and police levels.
Mandatory Live-in Registration Rules Under UCC
- Existing live-in couples must register within one month of UCC’s implementation.
- New live-in relationships must be registered within a month of initiation.
- If the woman becomes pregnant, the registrar must be notified, and the child’s birth status must be updated within 30 days.
- Non-registration may result in six months’ imprisonment, a ₹25,000 fine, or both.
Upon successful registration, couples will receive a receipt from the registrar, allowing them to rent accommodations in hostels, PGs, or rental homes. Additionally, parents or guardians will be informed about the relationship.
