A road accident was reported in Champawat district on Monday after a car travelling from Lohaghat to Pithoragarh lost control and fell into a deep gorge near the Ghat area. Two people sustained injuries in the incident. According to officials, the car bearing registration number UK-03-3999 went out of control just before the Ghat bridge and rolled nearly 100 metres down the gorge.
After receiving the information, teams from the Uttarakhand Police outpost at Barakot and the Uttarakhand Fire and Emergency Services station in Lohaghat reached the spot. With the help of local residents, rescue teams managed to pull the injured persons out of the damaged vehicle.
Both injured youths were taken out of the gorge and transported to the district hospital in Lohaghat through a 108 ambulance for medical treatment.
Tehsildar Brijmohan Arya said the car driver Yuvraj Oli (18), son of Rajkishore and a resident of Galchauda in Lohaghat, sustained serious injuries. The second occupant, Deepesh Kharkwal (18), son of Girish Kharkwal from Pithoragarh, suffered minor injuries in the accident. Officials said arrangements were being made to airlift the seriously injured youth for further treatment.
