Uttarakhand Weather Alert: Rain, Snowfall Warning Triggers Mobile Alerts

Weather conditions across Uttarakhand remained unstable on Friday, with authorities issuing warnings of heavy rainfall, snowfall, and strong winds in several regions. The India Meteorological Department has forecast wind speeds reaching 50 to 60 kmph, particularly in hilly areas, raising concerns over possible disruptions.

A sudden alert message received on mobile phones created concern among residents. The notification informed users about potential weather changes and advised them to remain cautious. Officials later clarified that the message was part of a cell broadcast system test aimed at strengthening early warning mechanisms for emergencies.

Over the past few days, weather patterns in the state have shifted noticeably. Continuous rainfall has been recorded since Thursday across both hill and plain districts. According to the alert, regions situated above 3000 meters may experience snowfall, while lower areas could see rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Districts including Bageshwar, Chamoli, Dehradun, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Champawat, and Uttarkashi are likely to witness intense rainfall with thunder and lightning at isolated locations. Higher Himalayan areas are expected to receive fresh snowfall, which may impact movement and local connectivity.

The alert message, delivered around mid-afternoon, was widely shared on social media, with many users seeking clarity about its purpose. While officials described it as a test, the sudden nature of the notification highlighted gaps in public awareness about such systems. Experts stressed that such alerts play a critical role in disaster preparedness but require better communication to avoid confusion.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in higher altitude areas, and to remain indoors during thunderstorms. People have also been cautioned against staying in open spaces during lightning activity.
