Despite six years since the announcement, AIIMS Rishikesh’s expansion plans remain in limbo as it awaits 200 acres of land in IDPL, Rishikesh, promised by former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat in 2018. Although the proposal was approved in the state cabinet, the transfer of land has not yet materialized, impacting the medical facility’s ability to expand crucial services.
Since its inception, AIIMS Rishikesh has experienced a surge in patients, with around 2,500-3,000 outpatients daily and approximately 150-200 inpatient admissions. The current 900-bed facility is insufficient, causing issues, especially in emergency services, where patients often wait on stretchers and wheelchairs. The proposed land transfer would allow for the construction of additional facilities, raising the bed capacity to 3,000. Expansion plans include a pediatric center, cancer and transplant centers, and a dedicated pharmacy institute, among others.
Over the years, several instances raised hope for AIIMS to receive the land. The forest department’s lease on IDPL’s 833-acre estate ended, and the state attempted to clear the area, raising expectations that 200 acres would be allocated to AIIMS. Additionally, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Rishikesh in April, anticipation grew for a formal announcement regarding the land. However, despite support from local authorities and repeated requests, official clearance remains pending.
According to Prof. Meenu Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Rishikesh, efforts continue to expedite the land transfer, which would enable several development projects and an increase in bed capacity, ultimately enhancing the hospital’s capacity to serve patients.
