Unseasonal snowfall in the higher reaches of Chakrata has brought back winter-like conditions in April, with a sharp drop in temperature across the region. The area recorded its fifth snowfall of the season on Wednesday, surprising residents and disrupting normal weather patterns.

Following intermittent rainfall since Tuesday, snowfall began around 11 am in elevated locations including Deoban, Khadamba, Durani, Kawntalani, and Moyla Top. The sudden weather shift pushed the minimum temperature down to 3°C, while the maximum remained around 8°C, intensifying the cold conditions.

The abrupt change in weather has raised concerns among apple growers in the region. Local orchardists, including Karam Singh Chauhan, Vijan Singh Chauhan, Hukam Singh, Kalyan Singh, Khajan, Guman Singh, Dalip Singh, Kripal Chauhan, Mahavir Pradhan, and Tikam Singh, reported that crops had already suffered damage due to hailstorm activity earlier this month.

They noted that apple orchards located at altitudes between 6,000 to 7,000 feet are currently in the flowering stage, which requires stable temperatures. Experts warn that snowfall and a sudden drop in temperature during this critical phase could adversely affect fruit setting and overall yield.

While the weather shift has added to the region’s scenic appeal, it has simultaneously exposed the vulnerability of horticulture to unpredictable climate patterns, raising concerns about long-term impacts on local livelihoods.
