The Uttarakhand government is working on the Parvatmala Mission to improve access to remote tourist and religious destinations. As part of this plan, a chair car ropeway will be built from Auli to the Gorson peak to strengthen Auli’s position as an international-level skiing and tourism destination. Work on the detailed project report (DPR) for this ropeway is currently underway.
The government also plans to further develop Auli’s slopes for skiing so that domestic and international tourists get better facilities. Earlier, a DPR for the Auli–Gorson ropeway was prepared through Bridge Corporation Limited, but now the work is being taken forward through the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML). The new DPR will be based on the earlier report.
Under the Parvatmala Mission, ropeways are being planned to make travel easier to difficult hilly areas. In the first phase, DPRs for ropeways from Sonprayag to Kedarnath and Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib have been completed, and work has already been allotted. DPRs are also being prepared for routes such as Kathgodam to Hanumangarhi in Nainital, Kankachauri to Kartik Swami, and Raithal Barsu to Barnala in Uttarkashi.
The Auli ropeway earlier suffered damage due to Joshimath land subsidence. The Joshimath–Auli ropeway will now be rebuilt using new technology. Officials say that once the Auli–Gorson chair car ropeway becomes operational, it will make access easier for tourists and help promote skiing activities. However, experts have pointed out that geological safety and long-term maintenance must be ensured so that such projects do not face issues similar to past infrastructure damage.
