Dehradun, December 7, 2024: Uttarakhand’s Bhimtal is set to create history by hosting Mountain Bike (MTB) racing for the first time as part of the 38th National Games. Previously limited to road and track cycling, MTB racing’s inclusion marks a significant expansion in India’s competitive cycling events. This move was approved by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the Uttarakhand Olympic Association, and the Cycling Federation of India (CFI).
Bhimtal’s Selection for MTB Racing
The scenic Sat Tal area of Bhimtal has been designated as the MTB racing venue. According to CFI Uttarakhand Secretary Devesh Pandey, the state’s challenging terrain and athletes’ experience in MTB racing make it an ideal location. “MTB’s inclusion in the National Games enhances Uttarakhand players’ chances of winning medals. The region’s geography and athletes’ expertise will play a pivotal role,” Pandey stated.
Training Camps Begin December 15
To prepare for the event, three specialized cycling camps—covering road cycling, track cycling, and MTB racing—will begin on December 15 and run for 15 days. Each participating athlete will receive a daily stay allowance of ₹800 and a meal allowance of ₹450. Participants must have a Uttarakhand domicile certificate to join the training. The camp will provide expert coaching on cycling techniques and competition strategies.
Boost to Local Talent and Sports Popularity
MTB racing’s inclusion in the National Games has fueled hopes for Uttarakhand’s athletes. Previously, local cyclists had to rely on external competitions to gain recognition. Now, they will have a direct opportunity to shine at the national level. The introduction of MTB racing alongside other cycling formats like cyclocross, BMX, road cycling, and track cycling is expected to boost its popularity nationwide. Organizing this event in Bhimtal not only highlights the region’s sporting potential but also strengthens Uttarakhand’s standing on India’s national sports map.
