Senior BJP leader and former Jwalapur MLA Suresh Rathore has landed in controversy after allegedly flouting the principles of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) — a law his party strongly supports. Despite having a wife and family, Rathore reportedly entered into a romantic relationship and later married actress Urmila Sanawar in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
The issue has drawn sharp criticism after videos of the marriage surfaced online, prompting the BJP leadership to take swift action. The party has issued a notice to Rathore, asking him to respond within seven days.
The controversy isn’t new. Rathore and actress Urmila Sanawar had been embroiled in a public dispute for months, with both filing legal complaints against each other. The situation escalated when their wedding ceremony took place recently, which sparked outrage and was seen as a public violation of the UCC spirit—especially as Rathore did not formally dissolve his existing marriage.
Taking note of the negative publicity, BJP state president Mahendra Bhatt directed state general secretary Rajendra Bisht to issue a formal notice to Rathore. The notice states that his conduct has consistently drawn adverse attention from media and social media, tarnishing the party’s image. His actions are being viewed as a breach of party discipline.
Rathore has been asked to provide a written explanation to the party within a week.
