A tragic road accident near Pokhari Band in Gopeshwar has left a family shattered after a school bus allegedly driven negligently ran over a woman, killing her on the spot. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon around 2 pm, when Manju Devi, a resident of Kothiyalsain, was travelling towards Gopeshwar on her scooty for personal work.
According to the police and eyewitness accounts, a bus belonging to Christ Academy School was heading towards Gopeshwar after school hours with children on board. Near Pokhari Band, the bus driver, identified as Alam Singh, attempted to overtake Manju Devi’s scooty from behind and hit her during the manoeuvre. The impact was severe, and she died at the spot.
Manju Devi is survived by three children — Priya (11), Kanak (9) and Aryan (5). The sudden loss of their mother triggered strong anger among family members and local residents, who gathered at Gopeshwar police station demanding action against the bus driver and accountability from the school management.
After prolonged discussions at the police station, an agreement was reached between the victim’s family and the school management. As part of the settlement, the school agreed to bear the complete educational expenses of all three children up to Class 12.
Gopeshwar Station House Officer Naresh Rathore said that a case has been registered against the bus driver based on the complaint submitted by the family. “The bus has been seized, and the driver has been taken into custody. Further legal action will be taken as per the investigation,” he said.
Local representatives, including former village head Mohan Singh Negi, councillor Surya Prakash Purohit, former district cooperative bank chairman Gajendra Rawat, former district panchayat member Yogendra Semwal and Yogambar Singh, were present during the discussions.
