In a remarkable example of grassroots entrepreneurship and women’s empowerment, the women of Matholi village in Chinyalisaur block, Uttarkashi district, have turned their traditional homes into successful homestays, branding their village as ‘Bwari Village’. The initiative is fast becoming a favorite destination for tourists seeking authentic rural experiences.
The transformation began during the COVID-19 lockdown when Pradeep Panwar, who had returned to the village, decided to convert the traditional cattle shelters (known locally as chhanis) into homestays. Using his background in tourism, he trained the local women in hospitality, cooking, trekking guidance, and village tours. Under his guidance, Matholi was rebranded as ‘Bwari Village’.
Today, the village offers online booking for homestays and has hosted nearly 1,000 visitors. More than 20 women are now self-employed through the initiative. Local resident Anita Panwar shared that inspired by the success, many more women are preparing to convert their own chhanis into homestays.
This unique initiative not only empowers women economically but also promotes sustainable tourism while positioning Matholi as an emerging destination in Uttarakhand’s tourism landscape.
