Carbon Dating Proposed for Sambhal Shiva Temple and Well, ASI Notified

The district administration of Sambhal has proposed carbon dating of the historic Shankar Temple and its well, known as ‘Amrit Koop,’ by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The temple, closed since communal riots in 1978, has now been reopened.

District Magistrate Rajendra Pensia confirmed that the temple, dedicated to Lord Kartik Mahadev, has resumed worship services. Security has been heightened with 24-hour surveillance, guards, and CCTV cameras. The temple premises have been cleaned, and electricity services have been restored.

Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar announced the installation of CCTV cameras along all access roads to the temple and the establishment of a control room. Additionally, PAC forces have been deployed for security.

Vishnu Sharan Rastogi, Patron of Nagar Hindu Sabha, recalled that the temple was abandoned after families left the area due to the riots. Decades later, the reopening has finally been accomplished.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Vandana Mishra stated that restoration efforts focused on preserving the temple’s original structure while removing encroachments. The anti-encroachment drive targeted only illegal constructions on public land.
