The Government of India has officially implemented a nationwide cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims. According to a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this scheme has come into effect from May 5, 2025. Under the scheme, any person injured in a road accident will be entitled to free treatment of up to ₹1.5 lakh per incident.
As per the notification, the scheme applies to any accident caused by a motor vehicle on Indian roads. Victims will receive free treatment at government or designated private hospitals across the country without any upfront payment. The facility will cover medical expenses for up to seven days from the date of the accident.
If a designated hospital is not accessible, the scheme allows only stabilisation treatment at non-designated hospitals. Separate guidelines have been issued for such cases to ensure that immediate care is provided before transferring the patient to a designated facility.
This initiative is part of the government’s effort to reduce fatalities and financial burdens resulting from road accidents and aims to ensure quick and efficient medical response nationwide.
