CBI Director Praveen Sood Gets One-Year Extension

The Central Government has extended the tenure of CBI Director Praveen Sood by one year. The decision was made following a high-level selection committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The committee also included Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. Based on the panel’s recommendations, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the extension beyond May 24, 2025.

Praveen Sood, a 1986-batch IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre, was appointed CBI Director on May 25, 2023, for a two-year term. With this extension, he will continue in office until May 2026. Prior to his CBI role, he served as the Director General of Police in Karnataka.

Born in 1964 in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, Sood joined the Indian Police Service at the age of 22. He is a civil engineering graduate from IIT Delhi and holds postgraduate degrees from IIM Bangalore and the Maxwell School of Governance at Syracuse University, USA.

Known for his technological proficiency, Sood has overseen several high-profile investigations and played a key role in strengthening the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) and the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS) in Karnataka through collaboration with the judiciary.
