Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in Uttarakhand. Just as the state was recovering from the Uttarkashi-Tharali disaster, a cloudburst in Chamoli caused massive destruction. Markets and homes in Tharali’s Chepado area were buried under debris, with reports of two people missing. The disaster has left families devastated, wiping out livelihoods and property in moments.
Late Friday night, a sudden surge from a rain-fed stream engulfed Tharali market and nearby houses. Vehicles were swept away, roads were blocked, and several houses damaged. The Tharali-Sagwada and Tharali-Gwaldam routes remain disrupted due to debris flow.
District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari reached the site to oversee rescue operations. Teams from NDRF, SDRF, and the police are carrying out relief and evacuation efforts. Meanwhile, schools in Tharali, Dewal, and Narayanbagad have been closed due to heavy rainfall alerts. Officials have urged people to stay in safe areas and contact local authorities during emergencies.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, MP Anil Baluni, and former CM Harish Rawat assured support through social media. Dhami said he is closely monitoring the situation, with administration and rescue teams actively working on the ground. He prayed for the safety of all affected families.
