Chinese Foreign Minister to Visit India for Border Talks with NSA Doval

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will arrive in India on Monday for talks with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval under the Special Representatives (SR) mechanism to address ongoing border issues, according to official sources. The visit comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled trip to Tianjin, China, where he will attend the annual Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

Sources indicate that Wang Yi’s visit will focus mainly on advancing the next round of SR-level discussions on the border dispute. Both Wang Yi and Ajit Doval are designated as Special Representatives by their respective countries to handle boundary negotiations. Doval had previously visited China in December last year for similar talks with Wang Yi.

This diplomatic engagement follows the meeting between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia, where both leaders agreed to revive various dialogue mechanisms. Relations between the two nations have shown signs of improvement since then.

India-China relations are warming at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on Indian goods. Following this development, NSA Doval also visited Russia and met with President Vladimir Putin. The two Asian giants have been working to improve ties after a deadly clash in Galwan Valley, Ladakh, in June 2020 strained relations to their lowest point in decades. Recent months, however, have seen gradual diplomatic progress.
