Uttarakhand – Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has cancelled the controversial orders issued by the District Panchayati Raj Officers (DPROs) of Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi regarding the installation of number plates on houses. The decision came after strong public criticism erupted on social media, where people questioned why the work was being handed to an outsider instead of local residents of Uttarakhand.
The issue gained traction when official letters from both districts surfaced online, revealing that the contract for installing number plates in rural areas—supposedly for promoting schemes like the Swachh Bharat Mission—had been assigned to an external individual. The move triggered widespread opposition, with locals accusing officials of ignoring state residents in favor of outsiders for government-funded projects.
Facing mounting criticism, Chief Minister Dhami took immediate cognizance of the matter and directed the cancellation of both DPROs’ orders with effect from Tuesday. He also ordered a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible for bypassing standard procedures.

Dhami emphasized that all government programs must operate transparently and in the public interest. He reiterated that local people’s employment and participation must remain the top priority in every developmental project. The Chief Minister further reminded officials that the state government’s rule—giving first preference to local vendors for contracts up to ₹10 crore—must be implemented without exception.
