Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami presented the state’s progress on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) during the Chief Ministers’ Council meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. CM Dhami highlighted that over 1.5 lakh applications have been received within four months of UCC implementation, with 98% of them coming from rural areas.
He informed that a robust system has been developed to implement the UCC smoothly. A dedicated portal and mobile app have been launched to simplify the registration process. Over 14,000 Common Service Centres (CSCs) across villages have been integrated into the system, along with auto-escalation and grievance redressal mechanisms to address user issues.
CM Dhami thanked Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their support and guidance. He recalled that the BJP had promised to implement the UCC in its 2022 election manifesto, and the government started working on it from the first day of assuming office.
The UCC bill was passed in the Uttarakhand Assembly on February 7, 2024, and received presidential assent on March 11, 2024. It was formally implemented across the state on January 27, 2025. The UCC aims to eliminate legal discrimination based on caste, religion, or gender, and ensures equal rights for all citizens.
Dhami added that the UCC will empower women and put a complete stop to regressive practices such as triple talaq, polygamy, child marriage, and nikah halala. However, Scheduled Tribes, as listed under Article 342 of the Constitution, have been exempted from the UCC to preserve their traditional customs and practices.
