Communal Tension in Nainital: Hindu Groups Demand Action Against Maulana

The recent altercation in Nainital’s Mallital area has taken a communal turn, prompting members of several Hindu organisations to gather at the local police station demanding action against a Maulana allegedly involved in the matter. This comes a day after a heated confrontation erupted when a Hindu girl was seen supporting a Muslim youth summoned by the police.

The situation escalated on Wednesday after Hani Nawab, a resident of Sukhatal, was called in for questioning regarding a physical assault case. The Hindu girl arrived in his support, which angered her family when they spotted her at the police station. Hindu group activists soon gathered and raised serious allegations against Hani, creating chaos. Police diffused the situation temporarily, but tensions flared up again when a local Maulana arrived at the Kotwali, prompting renewed protests.

Following these events, some individuals allegedly assaulted Hani’s father at his home. Later that night, members of Hindu organisations submitted a written complaint against the Maulana.

On Thursday morning, BJP Mandal President Nitin Karki, VHP Joint Secretary Vivek Verma, and Bajrang Dal Block Coordinator Manoj Kumar, along with others, reached the police station again. They held talks with SP Jagdish Chandra, demanding legal action. The SP assured them that the other side would also be called in for discussion, which helped ease the standoff.

Among those present during the meeting were Kunal Bedi, Aditya Chandravanshi, Raunak Saxena, Anuj Saxena, Mohit Sahdev, Vinod Singh, Saurabh, Rahul, and Anil Thakur.

Meanwhile, the girl, who spent the night under police protection, has refused to return with her father and relatives. Her mother was called from Chandigarh, and the police presented the girl before a magistrate for an official statement. Authorities say the situation is currently under control.
