Manipur: The Congress launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP over the ongoing violence in Manipur. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the BJP of being the “matchstick” that ignited the state’s unrest, claiming PM Modi failed to uphold his “Rajdharma.”
Kharge highlighted that the violence has persisted for over 600 days, with more than 250 lives lost and over 60,000 people displaced since May 3, 2023. Referring to PM Modi’s January 2022 visit to Manipur, he alleged that the trip was solely focused on securing votes for the BJP, ignoring the brewing tensions in the state.
The Congress also pointed to recent incidents in Kangpokpi district, including attacks on law enforcement officers, as further evidence of administrative failure. The party called Manipur’s BJP-led government incompetent and accused the central leadership of leveraging instability for political gains.
Kharge reiterated Congress and the INDIA alliance’s demands, which include:
- A direct visit by PM Modi to Manipur.
- Convening a meeting with political parties in Delhi.
- Immediate intervention to restore peace in the state.
According to Kharge, the PM has taken no action, avoiding constitutional responsibilities and leaving the state in turmoil.
