Couple Dies from Charcoal Fumes During Wedding Stay in Tehri

A tragic incident occurred in Dwari-Thapla village of Bhilangna block, Tehri district, where a couple died from suffocation caused by charcoal fumes on the night of January 16. The victims, Madan Mohan Semwal (52) and his wife Yashoda Devi (48), had brought a charcoal brazier into their room to keep warm during the winter.

According to village administrator Rinki Devi, the couple had traveled from Ghansali to attend a relative’s wedding in the village. After dinner, they lit the brazier to ward off the cold and slept with it inside the room. Overnight, the smoldering charcoal filled the room with smoke, leading to their suffocation.

The incident came to light the next morning when their son found the door unresponsive. Upon breaking it open, the couple was discovered lifeless. In mourning, the villagers and family conducted their last rites without notifying the police.

This incident highlights the critical need for awareness about the safe use of braziers, especially during winter.
