Decisive Battle Against Naxalism: Maoists Resort to IED Blasts

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced a comprehensive plan to eradicate Naxalism by March 2026, intensifying efforts through the Ministry of Home Affairs and security agencies. Over 200 new camps and forward operating bases (FOBs) have been established in Naxal-affected regions, causing disruption to Maoist operations and recruitment efforts.

In response to increased strategic activities and financial crackdowns by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Maoists are shifting from direct confrontations to relying heavily on Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). These explosives are made using locally available materials such as potassium, charcoal, and nitrate.

Advanced Techniques in IED Construction

Experts reveal that Maoists are producing a significant number of explosives in affected areas, using remote controls, infrared triggers, pressure-sensitive bars, and other advanced technologies. Specialized training is provided to operatives for deploying these devices effectively.

Security officials stationed in Chhattisgarh observe a growing dependency on remotely controlled blasts, leading to fewer face-to-face encounters. This poses a unique challenge for security forces, as timely deactivation of such explosives is difficult.

Emerging Challenges

Ballistics experts note the use of sophisticated devices like 1.95 desk timers and special detonators. However, a miscalculation in timing can cause accidental casualties among Maoists themselves.

Despite these challenges, the combined efforts of security forces and the Home Ministry aim to decisively eliminate Naxalism from its roots.
