Dehradun: Air Quality Turns ‘Toxic’ Ahead of Diwali, Pollution Likely to Rise Further Today

Dehradun’s air quality has deteriorated sharply ahead of Diwali, with rising levels of pollution posing health risks to residents. On Saturday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) at the Ghantaghar area reached 171 — significantly above the safe limit. Experts warn that pollution levels could nearly double today due to festive fireworks and stagnant winter air.

Environmental officials reported that slow wind speeds and smoke particles from firecrackers are trapping dust and pollutants (PM 2.5 and PM 10) in the atmosphere. The Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board has launched 24-hour air quality monitoring across 13 cities from October 13 to 27. In Dehradun, measurement stations have been set up at Ghantaghar, Nehru Colony, and Doon University.

Regional Officer Amit Pokhriyal stated that civic bodies are conducting road sprinkling, awareness campaigns through e-rickshaws, and appeals via social media to control pollution.

Health experts have advised asthma patients, children, and the elderly to remain indoors as much as possible, especially during and after Diwali night. Environmentalists also urged citizens to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali and minimize the use of firecrackers.

Data shows a steady rise in pollution over the past five days:

October 18: Ghantaghar 171, Nehru Colony 128

October 17: Ghantaghar 102, Nehru Colony 93

October 16: Ghantaghar 114, Nehru Colony 103

October 15: Ghantaghar 106, Nehru Colony 98

October 14: Ghantaghar 120, Nehru Colony 102

(AQI above 150 is considered hazardous for individuals with respiratory illnesses.)
