A cloudburst-like situation late Tuesday night in Dehradun’s Sahastradhara area caused massive damage, sweeping away debris into the main market. According to local representatives, two to three large hotels and around 7–8 shops collapsed, while several other establishments were damaged. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and fire department teams were dispatched, but heavy debris blocked their way. Public Works Department machines have been deployed to clear routes.
The Tamasa River turned furious, submerging the Shivling at Tapkeshwar Temple, forcing authorities to vacate the premises. At the same time, Song River near IT Park swelled due to heavy debris flow, prompting police to alert residents and shift people living near the riverbanks to safer locations.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami rushed to the affected areas to assess the situation and directed officials to ensure immediate relief, including shelter, food, water, and healthcare for impacted families. He stated that the state government stands firmly with every affected household and that relief and rescue operations are underway on a war footing.
Earlier, CM Dhami expressed grief over the losses through a social media post, assuring that administration, SDRF, and police teams are actively engaged in rescue efforts. He also confirmed being in constant touch with local authorities while personally monitoring the situation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to CM Dhami over phone, reviewed the disaster details, and assured all possible central assistance. Dhami thanked them, adding that their guidance would strengthen ongoing relief operations.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in Dehradun, Chamoli, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, Bageshwar, and Nainital. Widespread rainfall is expected across Uttarakhand until September 21.
