Dehradun Flood: Resort construction blamed for road collapse, DM orders probe

In Maldevta’s Kherimansingh area, a resort was being built by diverting the natural flow of the Song river. The work continued openly in daylight, yet the authorities did not intervene. After recent heavy rains washed away nearly 150 meters of road, the administration finally took notice.

PWD officials confirmed that the road collapse occurred due to the diversion of the river stream during the resort’s construction. District Magistrate Savin Bansal has ordered a probe into the matter and directed action against those responsible. Since the disaster, the DM has been visiting Maldevta and other affected areas with the administrative team to speed up relief operations and reconstruction of damaged government property.

The damage assessment by the PWD estimates a loss of around ₹6 crore. Investigations revealed that the approach road to Sparsh Farm & Resort was protected, as the river’s course had been shifted to safeguard it. However, this diversion caused floodwaters, carrying boulders and debris, to strike and erode the public road instead.

The situation has raised serious questions over departmental negligence. The resort was not built overnight—it required official permissions and inspections. If permissions were granted, why were irregularities overlooked? And if inspections were never done, it reflects grave administrative failure. With the DM’s inquiry underway, accountability may extend beyond local officials to higher representatives of the government.
