In a anti-corruption action in Dehradun, the Uttarakhand Vigilance Establishment arrested a junior engineer of the power department while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹80,000. The accused, identified as Atul Kumar, was posted at the 33/11 KV power substation in Pathribagh. He had allegedly demanded the bribe from a complainant for issuing an electricity connection and increasing the sanctioned load for an apartment purchased in the name of the complainant’s wife.
According to officials, the complainant approached the vigilance department and filed a formal complaint regarding the demand for illegal gratification. After verifying the complaint, the vigilance team laid a planned trap.
During the trap operation, the team caught the accused red-handed while accepting ₹80,000 from the complainant. Officials collected evidence from the spot and immediately took the junior engineer into custody.
A case has been registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and further investigation is underway to determine whether other officials or employees are also involved in the matter.
The action has created a stir within the power department. Vigilance officials have urged citizens to report any instances of bribery or corruption so that strict action can be taken against those involved.
