The National Commission for Women’s “Naari 2025 Women’s Safety Report” has placed Dehradun among the country’s 10 most unsafe cities for women. The findings reveal that Dehradun scored just 60.6% on the women’s safety index, falling below the national average of 64.6%. In comparison, cities like Kohima recorded a much higher safety score of 82.9%.
The survey, based on women’s responses across multiple parameters, highlighted worrying trends. Only 50% of women in Dehradun considered the city safe or very safe, compared to the national average of 60%. Around 10% reported feeling unsafe or highly unsafe, while 41% described the city as “neither safe nor unsafe.”
Daytime safety perception stood at 70%, dropping sharply to 44% at night. Public harassment cases were also reported, with 6% of women admitting they had faced such incidents, many repeatedly. Verbal harassment emerged as the most common issue. The report also flagged poor infrastructure, inadequate lighting, and lack of women-friendly transport systems. It recommended stricter laws, better street lighting, safe transport, and inclusive infrastructure to improve women’s safety in the city.
