District Library Runs Without Librarian for 25 Years, Readers Face Ongoing Problems

The Government District Library in Almora is facing serious staff shortages, affecting its daily functioning and regular readers. For nearly 25 years, key posts including librarian and two attendant positions have remained vacant, forcing the library to operate with limited manpower.

Established in the 1960s at the Almora district headquarters, the library was sanctioned posts for one librarian, one junior assistant and two attendants as per norms. At present, the entire responsibility of operations is being handled by a single junior assistant, even though around 100 to 150 readers visit the library daily.

Officials confirm that the long-pending vacancies have directly impacted readers and the maintenance of books. The library holds more than 40,000 books, but due to staff shortage, proper upkeep, monitoring and timely repair of books are not being carried out. Disorganised collections have increased the risk of books getting damaged or lost.

While basic facilities such as Wi-Fi are being provided to readers, the absence of adequate staff has raised concerns about the long-term condition of the library. The Chief Education Officer, Almora, stated that information regarding vacant posts has been sent to the Education Directorate and the government. However, the delay of over two decades points to administrative neglect, leaving readers to bear the consequences.
