Drishti Eye Institute launches ‘Family First’ Glaucoma screening programme

DEHRADUN, 8 Nov: On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Uttarakhand’s state formation, Drishti Eye Institute, Dehradun, has launched a new initiative titled the Glaucoma Family Screening Programme starting today, to promote early detection and prevention of Glaucoma (Kala Motia) among families.

Under this programme, patients undergoing Glaucoma treatment at Drishti Eye Institute can get their family members for free screening. Through this initiative, Drishti Eye Institute reaffirms its commitment to providing quality eye care and promoting preventive eye health in the community.

Highlighting the importance of the programme, Gaurav Luthra, Director of Drishti Eye Institute, said that it aims to raise awareness about the hereditary nature of Glaucoma and encourages family members of glaucoma patients to undergo timely screening, as in nearly 90% of cases the disease is diagnosed at an advanced stage when it may be too late to save useful vision.

Amardeep Kaur, Head of the Glaucoma Department, emphasized that relatives of Glaucoma patients have up to a 20 per cent higher risk of developing the condition. Other risk factors include High Myopia, Diabetes, Hypertension and trauma. Shivam Gupta, Glaucoma specialist, added that around 50 per cent Glaucoma patients have a family history of the disease, and that early diagnosis plays a crucial role in preventing vision loss and preserving eye health.
