In a major decision aimed at strengthening grassroots-level election operations, the Election Commission of India has doubled the annual honorarium for Booth Level Officers (BLOs) from ₹6,000 to ₹12,000. BLO supervisors will now receive ₹18,000 annually, up from the earlier ₹12,000.
Additionally, the incentive for BLOs engaged in the voter list revision process has been increased from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000. Sub-divisional magistrates serving as Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) will now receive an annual honorarium of ₹30,000, while Tehsildars working as Assistant EROs (AEROs) will be paid ₹25,000 per year. This marks the first time that honorariums have been formally fixed for EROs and AEROs.
The ECI had earlier approved an additional ₹6,000 incentive for BLOs participating in a special intensive revision exercise starting from Bihar. The move reflects the Commission’s commitment to fairly compensating field-level staff involved in maintaining accurate electoral rolls and ensuring smooth election operations.
Currently, Uttarakhand has around 13,000 active BLOs and approximately 70 SDMs functioning as EROs, all playing key roles in the state’s electoral framework.
