Equal Pay for Equal Work: First Phase to Benefit Around 5,500 UPNL Employees in Uttarakhand

The Uttarakhand government has issued an order to provide equal pay for equal work to UPNL employees, bringing major relief to thousands of contractual workers demanding fair wages and job regularisation. The decision comes after UPNL employees had been on strike for the past 16 days, pressing for long-pending demands.

According to Sainik Kalyan Minister Ganesh Joshi, nearly 5,500 UPNL employees will receive the benefit in the first phase, and the remaining eligible employees will be covered gradually in subsequent phases. The minister stated that the government is committed to ensuring fair compensation and addressing concerns raised by the workforce.

UPNL employees have long argued that they perform duties equivalent to regular staff yet receive significantly lower wages. The announcement is seen as a crucial step towards reducing disparities and improving workplace equity across government departments.

The order was issued following instructions from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who emphasised that employees serving the state must receive justified pay aligned with their responsibilities.
