Expert Team Completes Study, Report Awaited on Dharali Disaster

An expert team investigating the causes of the recent disaster in Dharali, Uttarkashi, has returned after conducting a detailed ground and aerial survey. The report, once finalized, is expected to shed light on the reasons behind the calamity that struck the region on August 5.

The state government had constituted the team with scientists from Wadia Institute, CBRI Roorkee, IIT Roorkee, and GSI. On August 14, the team began its field study, which included site inspections in Dharali and an assessment of the lake formed in Harsil. Aerial surveys were also carried out to study the Khir Ganga catchment area, believed to have carried heavy debris towards Dharali. However, dense cloud cover limited visibility in the upper catchment.

Satellite images may now be used to determine the origin and scale of debris flow. The team returned on Saturday evening, and its findings are being compiled into a detailed report. Officials have stated that no conclusions will be shared until the report is submitted. Secretary of Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, Vinod Kumar Suman, confirmed that further information will be provided only after the study is reviewed.
