First batch of 18 youths from shelter homes set to become self-reliant

A new initiative in Uttarakhand aims to make youths from juvenile homes and orphanages self-reliant. The Women and Child Welfare Department has prepared the state’s first batch of 18 youngsters who will undergo a three-month training at Haldiram Skill Academy in Noida. After completing the course, they will be offered jobs with a starting salary of around Rs 19,000 per month.

The training will be a multi-cuisine course. Before departing for Noida on 25 August, the youths will attend a state-level orientation program in Haridwar, where they will receive special guidance. According to Women and Child Welfare Director Banshi Lal Rana, 12 of the participants are those who left juvenile homes after turning 18, while six are orphaned or abandoned girls from Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar, and Haridwar districts. Haridwar contributes the maximum number, with 13 participants, which is why the program begins there.

Chief Probation Officer Anjana Gupta informed that the batch will be provided accommodation, food, hygiene kits, transport, uniforms, and mobile phones during the training. On completing the course, they will be placed at various Haldiram outlets. Additionally, financial support will be extended in their first month of employment.
