The Uttarakhand government has requested over ₹400 crore from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to control forest fires and secure additional resources. The proposal has been submitted to the ministry for approval.
This year, forest fires affected thousands of hectares of forest land in Uttarakhand, resulting in the loss of valuable forest resources and claiming the lives of 11 people. The incidents raised concerns about the forest department’s response, prompting the government to take disciplinary action against several officials, including Chief Conservators, Conservators, and Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs). Following this, the forest department has developed a five-year action plan, requesting ₹404 crore to strengthen firefighting efforts.

The proposal includes equipping small firefighting vehicles with water tanks and fire-extinguishing tools. These vehicles will be stationed near forested roads, where they can quickly respond to fires. Pine forests are highly susceptible to fires, and moisture conservation efforts are planned to help reduce fire spread.
