Uttarakhand Schools Introduce Daily Gita Recitation with Scientific Interpretation

Starting today, students across Uttarakhand’s government and unaided schools will recite shlokas from the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita during morning assemblies. Alongside the recitation, scientific and value-based interpretations of the verses will be explained to students. This initiative follows directives issued by Director of Secondary Education Dr. Mukul Kumar Sati, who instructed Chief Education Officers to ensure daily implementation in all schools.

As per the directive, one Gita shloka will be read with its meaning every day, and one value-based verse will be chosen each week to be displayed on school notice boards. Teachers will explain the philosophical and scientific relevance of these teachings in modern life, emphasizing their connection with emotional balance, leadership, decision-making, logic, and moral philosophy. Weekly discussions will be held to gather student feedback.

The aim is to integrate Gita teachings into students’ behavior and mindset, not just treat them as academic content. Schools must ensure that the initiative fosters character development, self-control, balanced life perspective, and scientific thinking, contributing to the holistic development of responsible citizens.

In alignment with this move, the Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana have been officially added to Uttarakhand’s curriculum framework following directions from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Dr. Sati confirmed that new textbooks incorporating these texts, aligned with NEP 2020, are proposed to be implemented in the next academic session. The CM had previously directed this integration as part of strengthening the Indian knowledge tradition in education.
