Vyasi Hydro Project: Hope for Golden Mahseer Conservation

The Vyasi Hydro Power Project, operated by UJVNL, is now playing a vital role in conserving the endangered Golden Mahseer fish, going beyond its core function of electricity generation. Since February 2024, a dedicated hatchery has been established at the project site, and it has successfully produced around 9,000 Golden Mahseer fish.

Out of these, 3,000 Mahseer have been released into the Vyasi reservoir using ranching techniques to help restore the species in its natural habitat. The release was carried out in the presence of UJVNL General Manager Indra Mohan Karasi and Chakrata Forest Officer Abhimanyu Singh.

The Golden Mahseer, recognized as the state fish of Uttarakhand, is typically found in major rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, and Kosi. Due to declining populations, it is classified as an endangered species. UJVNL and the Forest Department are jointly working towards its preservation.

According to UJVNL Managing Director Dr. Sandeep Singhal, the hatchery was established under the technical guidance of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Bhimtal. The department also plans to introduce these fish into other water bodies in the future as part of a broader conservation initiative.
