The GST Council has approved a major relief for consumers by reducing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on footwear and apparel priced up to ₹2,500 per piece to 5 percent. Earlier, the 5 percent slab was applicable only on items priced up to ₹1,000, while those above were taxed at 12 percent.
The decision was taken in the 56th GST Council meeting chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, with state finance ministers in attendance. Alongside, the Council has also moved to eliminate the 12 percent and 28 percent tax slabs, shifting most goods into the 5 percent and 18 percent brackets.
