Political tensions have flared up in Haridwar district after Karuna Karnwal, Block Chief of Bhagwanpur, leveled serious allegations against former MLA Deshraj Karnwal. Nearly two years after the Panchayat elections, Karuna addressed the media in a press conference held at the Block Chief’s office, where she accused the former BJP legislator of harassment and misconduct.
During the conference, Karuna Karnwal alleged that Deshraj Karnwal withheld key documents, including her mother Suman Karnwal’s caste certificate, despite repeated requests for their return. She claimed that the former MLA misused her signature on blank documents, obstructed her work, and even filed complaints against her, leading to police visits to her home.

Karuna further alleged that Deshraj Karnwal maintained complete control over block operations, leaving her as a nominal figurehead. She revealed that he retained the caste certificate and other critical documents of her family. Determined to address these issues, Karuna stated she would now assume full responsibility for block operations and ensure development projects are conducted transparently. She expressed confidence in receiving government support to carry out her duties.
Adding to the allegations, Karuna’s mother, Suman Karnwal, accused the former MLA of exploiting her daughter, treating her like a servant by making her perform menial tasks despite her position as Block Chief.
In response to these claims, when contacted, Deshraj Karnwal stated over the phone that he was currently away and dismissed the allegations. He claimed that this was a political conspiracy orchestrated by Congress MLA Mamta Rakesh and BJP leader Subodh Rakesh to tarnish his reputation.
Karuna also vowed to inspect all previously completed projects personally and report any irregularities to the Chief Minister and relevant authorities for investigation. The allegations have reignited political debates, exposing deep divisions in Haridwar’s political landscape.
