NITI Aayog has released a new policy report aimed at improving the quality of higher education in states and State Public Universities (SPUs). The commission’s CEO BVR Subrahmanyam stated that to achieve the goal of making India a developed nation by 2047, a world-class education system is essential.
The report was unveiled by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery, Education Member Dr. Vinod Kumar Paul, CEO BVR Subrahmanyam, Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi, and Association of Indian Universities (AIU) Secretary General Dr. Pankaj Mittal. It provides a detailed analysis of education quality, financial management, administration, and employment opportunities.
Vice Chairman Suman Bery highlighted that public universities in countries like the US and Brazil set high standards for higher education. He stressed the need for Indian SPUs to strive toward similar benchmarks.
NITI Aayog Member Dr. Vinod Kumar Paul emphasized that the report aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) and the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. He noted that since 80% of higher education in India is provided by SPUs, reforming these institutions is crucial. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s directive, NITI Aayog’s role is to conduct policy research, while the responsibility for implementation lies with the relevant ministries. The commission hopes that central and state governments will effectively implement the recommendations outlined in the report.
